When I was roaming around the rooms of Alpha Chi Omega’s Theta Tau Chapter House as VP of Sorority Recruitment at Rutgers University in the early 2000’s, I had a recurring thought in the back of my mind. One day, I’d write about this entire experience. The fleeting moments and lasting friendships were too special to let go with time.
After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Douglass College, Rutgers University in 2005, when everyone else was ready to move onto the next big thing, my dear friend Jennifer and I continued to live in the sorority house for one final summer. We were holding onto the past and reminiscing about the great times we shared together as housemates and members of the same sorority. At that time, we frequently discussed our futures and imagined the possibilities of what we could accomplish as individual, independent young women blessed to have each other’s support.
Before smart phones and social media outlets exploded to inspire the average person to produce daily snapshots of their lives, I was a college girl obsessed with crafting, scrap-booking and pestering my friends with a digital camera at social events and walks around campus. I created homemade gifts for my friends that featured the special times we shared.
Knowing you cannot rush a creative concept, it wouldn’t be until years later that I would realize the potential in putting my old ideas back into motion. That’s what sorority life is all about – respecting tradition and honoring the past while thinking in the moment and preparing for the future.
